Whoosh! chartreuse chatter
lifts into a golden evening.
Imagination did not prepare me for
the spectacle of wild budgies as they
heave and push through spent grasses
veering to and fro
as if one mind.
Such sights are rare in the flesh.
In videos transmitted by lines and pixels,
the living sound and colour cannot
be matched by our devices.
So let the earth dust your shoes
and the dew settle on your brow.
It is so worthwhile.

* Today, September 1 is the first day of Spring, also Wattle Day. The golden wattle are in blossom in the southern states but here I have captured our version of green and gold (our national colours), featuring wild budgerigars and the winter’s dried, golden grasses. I’ve been feeling a little poetic lately too…and by the way, a ‘chatter’ is what a large flock of budgies is called!

Thank you . . . for the words to which I so relate, the wondrous photo already enjoyed a few days back, the sharing of a beautiful first day of spring and the wattle I do not have within sights either . . .
May I add another ‘green-and-gold’ which has touched my heart so very deeply over the last week . . . the sharing, huge appreciation, love and admiration of our Paralympic athletes having such incredible success and making all of us so proud oft fighting against the greatest odds in Tokyo.
Your email address did not survive a computer breakdown quite some time ago so I cannot send but you should be able to find Dylan Alcott’s incredible wheelchair tennis semi-final last night – and what came after . . . when he and his very young Dutch foe wept in each other’s arms. Current world problems simply ceased to be . . . . be well, be happy . . .

I agree with your green and gold addition of the Paralympics. I saw the embrace with Dylan Alcott and his Dutch opponent, very moving. I love the back stories of the Paralympics. Such adversity many of them have overcome. I’m glad my little post could brighten your day with some ‘chartreuse chatter’!

I loved your how your poem made richer the experience for me of how your artist’s eye made a connection that I’d not noticed but will now pleasingly never be able to unsee… a chatter of budgies when in the presence of a stand of flowering wattle and because it’s unlikely that ’round these parts I’ll encounter anything other than a [sadly] caged budgie, I’ll take heart in it’s resemblance to a stem of wattle leaves and flowers.
Right now it’s all the more important to see beauty through others’ eyes… thank you ♡

I’m so glad you will not ‘unsee’ the vision of the budgies and the golden grasses. It was truly amazing and a beauty I wish I could share far and wide. In fact, I had decided when I was writing this, seeing and sharing beauty will be my work from now on. xx

That’s such lovely poetry, Ardys. I got tingles imagining the budgies whooshing around!

Wow, I gave you tingles! Thank you so much. The video I was lucky to catch mesmerises me every time I watch it. Unfortunately this template does not allow me to post video. I might have to get a new template!

I upgraded my WordPress plan to allow me to post videos, but then I discovered that those large files fill up my alloted space quickly. Now I’m starting to put some of my videos on YouTube and then just link to them on the blog to save space.

What a special treat it must have been to watch and record the budgies in such a lovely setting. I saw something similar on National Geographic but to witness a “chartreuse chatter” in person, would be almost magical! Thank you for sharing!

It was SO special, Donna. I was so excited I was sure my videos wouldn’t turn out, but they did, thank goodness. Yes, it was quite a magical moment and I wish everyone could experience it. xx
