I have just successfully completed the final hurdle in the track and field event that was the transferring of our internet account to the new National Broadband Network.
I think.
To be perfectly honest, it has been a tedious week at times, but at the moment I am standing on the dais accepting my gold medal for installing our NBN modem and net phone and having everything operational. Advance Australia Fair!
About a week ago I got the news that the replacement skylights for the ones smashed during the hail storm had arrived.
Smashed.
We are still waiting for the second lot to arrive. Immediately following that news I managed to lose my reading glasses out of a pocket on my morning walk. I found what was left of them.
Also smashed.
Apprehensive that there was an unfortunate pattern developing, I was greatly relieved when I was able to get into the optometrist the next day and order new glasses. I’m waiting for those to arrive–hopefully not smashed.
The day after the glasses incident we had an appointment with our tax agent. We have never resented paying taxes because we know if we hadn’t made the money in the first place there would be no tax to pay. Yes, occasionally we’d like to see it better spent, but that’s a separate issue. It took both of us about two hours each to get all the details and receipts together for this appointment and so far we have not heard from the agent that we have forgotten anything. Could there be another gold medal in the offing?
And just when we were feeling like the week was a bit of a slog, here came a FaceTime chat from our daughter and boyfriend in Greece.
💕’We are engaged to be married’💕
Boyfriend surprised her with a ring in the bottom of a wine glass while overlooking the sea, from a cliff top wine bar on Santorini. Could it be any more romantic? We are very happy for them, and for all of us. Daughter and Boyfriend have been together for 4.5 years, having met two weeks after she moved to Adelaide and having moved in together only a few weeks later. When love happens, it seems it is obvious, at least in our family. Hubby and I spent only 6 weeks together before becoming engaged so we kind of know how it can happen. We enjoy the future in-laws and of course our son-in-law-to-be and look forward to the future together.
The next day we celebrated with a beautiful walk at the Alice Springs Telegraph Station, something we have been meaning to do for years. And then we were back to seeming like we weren’t quite clearing the hurdles again. There was the morning I sat on the toilet and ‘mid-stream’ noticed a very large spider next to me. There was a worrying message from family, flaring of arthritis, and things seemed back to normal.
At times Life feels like preparation for the Olympics. We train and practice and drag ourselves back from defeat and frustration, time after time. And then we have a win. We have a win that makes the rest of it seem worthwhile, or at least tolerable. I’ll accept the gold for the technical win, but the real win, of course, is seeing someone I love accepting the ring.

Much more interesting than the Olympics. I would probably swallow that gold ring in wine glass or complain that my wine glass was empty. Romance is a golden thing. As for all your other trials, good luck.

I told our daughter it was lucky she didn’t swallow the ring! Haven’t heard all the details yet so looking forward to catching up with her in a couple of weeks. I don’t find the Olympics very interesting either Francesca.

I have horrendous stories about NBN. We’re enjoying the benefits now but it was a nightmare coordinating them with Telstra. We lost a week or two of valuable time making appointments and them waiting or them to show. Exciting times ahead for you Ardys, nothing like an offspring’s romance to put time in perspective!! Your gold medal life and times much more exciting than the Olympics

I’ll send you a duplicate gold medal, Sandra. I am quite proud of being able to get things changed over, given I’m not really a technical person. I told my husband, who is in Darwin this week, I really feel sorry for people who are trying to work and have families; I wonder how they can manage the time to do it? It seems there are a few of us less than enamoured of the Olympics, but given our daughter had called us from Greece, I couldn’t help but use the Olympic metaphor.

Very romantic proposal in a romantic setting. I’m sure she’ll remember it for the rest of her life. Congrats! Puts all the other trials into perspective. Broken windows can be replace (twice if necessary) and new glasses can be ordered. You are going to have a great time wedding planning! Much more interesting than watching TV.

Thank you Debi. I’m hoping the wedding planning is kept to a minimum. We didn’t have a big wedding and ours worked just fine and gave us lovely memories, so am hoping our daughter feels the same. Yes, things like that put all the other irritations into perspective. Right after posting this, our builder called and it looks like most things will be in place and repaired at the end of next week 🙂

Congratulations for all concerned as far as the formalization of a love story is concerned! Enjoy the glow!!! OK: as far as I know we do not have NBN even tho’ but a 100 kms + south of Sydney. Am more worried that the whole software for Telstra/BigPond [with whom I have been since I first entered the realms of the Internet] is about to totally change within the next week or so: am pretty computer illiterate and too far into the National Parks area for any professional help to be willing to come out to help! Telstra of course is never available for a ‘consultation’ – offshore tho’ it would be!! You are fortunate to have transferred to NBN!! Oh, am SO enjoying the Olympics tho’ the less said about a certain TV station occupying ‘sole’ rights the better!!

I have to say, we do not have our internet services through Telstra. We have been with iiNET for nearly 11 years and they have generally had competitive rates and very good service. They did provide some pretty good service for doing the changeover yourself, but there was one major hiccup which one of their online chat technicians had gotten quite wrong, and caused me to be without internet or phone for a day. Even with iiNET, the problem was it took me part of three different days to get everything changed over and all systems operational again. I just can’t imagine that most people have that kind of time, patience or skill. Not that I’m an expert, I’m not, but because we don’t live in a place where much technical expertise has always been available, I have learned to work through things myself and I’m familiar with my computer system and our circumstances. I wish you luck if you do need to transition to the NBN. In our case, we had no choice. We were told the copper system will be turned off in 18 mos, so we may as well make the change now. I’m glad you are enjoying the Olympics, Eha. It’s a good thing we don’t all enjoy the same things–it might be a very boring world!

Ardyz . . . with us it is not a matter of > NBN, it is actually one of Telstra > new software Telstra . . . so far no new letter, now overdue. Interesting that you have been so long with iiNet: I know they have way better rates [well, e’one does!] – I have just been afraid to change to a cheaper server in case they did not last or I needed one with whom I had ‘a history’!! Have to have a serious look-see after the Olympics and the Vuelta . . . most people I know are not happy with whom you no doubt also remember as ‘Telecom’!!! Feel v low at the moment as cannot believe ‘our’ Campbell Sisters failed to score!! When people work as hard as they have one kind;of hopes and hopes some more . . . Have a decent weekend . . .

I’m so happy your experiences balanced out. The thought of navigating telco anything makes me want to forfeit 😉I’m so very pleased for you, and your Daughter & Boyfriend with their news. It takes a lot of confidence to make a commitment, and good parental background & support makes a huge difference, I believe. Like having a good coach & trainer…

Thanks so much Dale. When I think back at how stressful my own engagement and wedding were, I know exactly how not to behave. The NBN transition wasn’t too horrible but I’m gathering it is because we were already with iiNET and stayed with them. Happy travels. xx

Good for you on your achieved technical skills! And what a wonderful proposal. Will you have much to do with the wedding planning? Regardless of the amount in interaction, it’s an exciting time for all to look forward to such a happy event!

Thank you Lori. We have no idea of details or impending nuptials as yet. They are still on their overseas holiday. We are going to Adelaide in two weeks and will find out more then. They have been in a very difficult situation ever since getting together, in that he works at a job that is 6 hours drive away so he has to live on site, and she lives in their townhouse in the city. They see each other for three days every second week. That should come to an end at the end of this year as he is due to finish his electrical apprenticeship by then and so they plan to try and get jobs in the same place. We imagine they will want to get things settled with employment before they try to organise a wedding. I will have as much or as little to do with things as is asked of me, but our daughter usually knows what she wants with these things and I will always defer to her desires. I will be very interested to hear her thoughts, however.
