Pick a Saturday morning in Alice Springs, or any town in Australia, and you will find a ‘sausage sizzle’ going on somewhere! As far as I know this is a tradition unique to Australia. When I grew up in the USA in the 60’s our fund raising activities of choice were the ‘car wash’ or a ‘bake sale’. Bake sales are popular here too, but the sausage sizzle is king. I can’t eat anything they serve at one of these, but I loved that this group was so happy to be spending their Saturday morning outside of K-Mart, raising money for something I didn’t even know was going on here in Alice– Indoor Beach Volleyball! Not only is it going on, this is their 10th year!!!
I do lead a sheltered life.
I donated to their funds and wouldn’t accept any food but I asked them for a photo and said I’d promote their activity. They loved the idea. The game they play is apparently a mix of beach volleyball and indoor hard court volleyball. Their season commenced on 25th August and runs through until 5th December and is played at 11 Kennett Court, when they are at home. They travel interstate for games as well.
I say, thumbs up for the Desert Sands group, doing something wholesome, but tongs up for the Aussie sausage sizzle, and all the funds it has raised over the years!

It’s hard not to encounter a sausage sizzle on the weekends if you visit a large supermarket or hardware store. The G.O. and I have been known to partake, sometimes very gratefully if we are rushed and starving. A sausage on white bread with onions & sauce would probably count among the G.O.’s favourite foods but I find the merit as you do in the fundraising aspect, the cheerful people and that they never ask for more than it’s worth, hence they usually get to keep the change from ours. Cheers for the sausage sizzle and also a great season for the Desert Sands Indoor Beach Volleyball Team 🙂

Thank you EllaDee. I would love to be able to eat the sausage and onions and sauce, they smell so heavenly, and once upon a time I could, but these days I would feel quite sick from eating them. Never mind, tongs up!

I love a good cause and fundraisers like this are great. I”d love to see the custom adopted here but with our weather it would have to be indoors.

If I lived in Alice, I would be on the team. I was so upset when they closed down both the rebound and beach volleyball here in town.

I think if I was 30 years younger I might be on the team too, Suz. I have too many things wrong with my body at 61 to be throwing myself around after a volleyball, but I used to like playing. Thanks for reading!

we have sausage sizzles in NZ too.. everywhere, and it is usually hideous weather too but there they are huddled over the barbee! Have a lovely day.. c

I love the “Sausage Sizzle” concept. What a fresh and novel thing to throw into a few U.S. schools in place of a bake sale, or a car wash. Great idea. I would always be in line. As I am for the bake sales. Not so much for the car washes.
And oh, how I miss my volleyball days. Boy, did I live for that sport. Now I just live for the bake sales.
